Project summary
Purpose
The Project Social Media Education for Adults (SMEA) aims at increasing information and deepening understanding of the cultural and social change made by social media and community services which are available on the Internet.
The project aims at improving the skills of adult educators and journalists to professionally benefit from social media. It also aims at improving safety for children and youth on the Internet (online safety) by educating adults, parents and adults working with children, and via information and discussion in media. Social Media Education for Adults (SMEA) as preparatory visits aims at a further development project.
SMEA is a prepatory visit project. For preparation of a development project and to achieve common understanding of the objectives, the prepatory visit project organizes two 5 days seminars with 2 partners from every participating organization to learn about social media as a factor of social and cultural change in society and as working tool for adult educators and journalists.
During the preparatory visits the participators will get information and also map learning needs of the target groups of their own organization. As result the participators (partners) have better understanding of social media so that they are able to make concrete plans for a further project. This further developing project aims at learning material and course modules to be done for adult learning, tools and a publication to help adult educators and journalists benefit from social media in their work.
Background/motivation for the project
The deep social change in the society and the transformation of the social environment, caused by developments in the utilisation of the Internet for new kinds of purposes, has caused a gap between adults and youth and children in using (and comprehending) Internet and perceiving the aspects of social media on the Internet.
There is a clear need of adult educators and journalists to understand and to be able to benefit from social media. Furthermore, there is a need for parents and other adults to understand community services of Internet and to support children and youth in online safety.
Prepatory meetings will work with experts and specialists in Internet, especially in social media and consist one 5 days meeting with workshops including travel days in Tallinn September 2009 and the second 5 days meeting with workshops in Helsinki in December 2009
Description of partnership ("who does what"):
Coordinator, Foundation Kansanvalistusseura, will organize the two prepatory visits, one in September 2009 in Tallinn and the other December 2009 in Helsinki.
